Nautilus

Nautilus

Prototype housing

This is the design work for a prototype housing unit with sustainable design features. The design has been affected both in form and dynamics by the morphology of the sea creature nautilus.

The building's plan is based on nautilus' shell structure where small transverse diaphragms provide with the necessary structural stability. Similarly arranged, small internal walls made out of masonry provide the roof plates with structural support.

The faces of the house have perforated sliding panels with perforation patterns based on images of the surrounding natural environment. This idea came from the fact that nautilus' shell forms its shape and coloring based on the environment surrounding it so that it's camouflaged from its enemies. The panels provide with shade and in combination with a "cooling moat" and a shallow water tank create cooling air drifts through the building.
