"Kiritoshi House"

A single-family house has recently been designed by Japanese studio Sugawaradaisuke in Oamishirasato city, part of Chiba Prefecture, in central Japan. The house is characterised by a generous openness towards the exterior, offering residents a bright atmosphere. "The client's aim", state the architects, "was to connect the house with the context, allowing for an intimate relation beetween the residents and surrounding nature."

The outer shell is a simple box which naturally blends with the context. The main entrance is defined by a deeply angled cut inside the wall, anticipating the interior articulation. Here, a series of tridimensional cellars house diverse functions, animating the open area of the living room. Space perception is amplified and so is each room's storage capacity. "The physical perception experienced in this house reminds the one you have in an excavation ― Kiritoushi―, where a fusion of both natural and artificial dimensions takes place".

There is a special beauty, a hidden charm in the creations of man that abandoned while nature then leave its own mark on them.
As shown in the selection of images below, buildings and "wrecks" acquired after their abandonment, a strange fascination as little by little, decomposing by the forces of nature.

Carving the stones

http://perierga.gr/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/petra1.jpg
Hirotoshi Itoh graduated from the National University of Fine Arts in Tokyo in 1982 and initially worked in the family business as a stonemason. At the same time, dealt with the metal, which was his great love, he says, until he discovered the pebbles ... and immediately fell in love!
"As a child I grew up in the ... stone.
With a chisel carves various pictures on the surface, although the metal has always been on my top priorities. The pebbles found out later from a random event. A friend of mine picked up on the beaches and he made fine workmanship. "
That's it! Hirotoshi Itoh started endless walks on river banks and coasts, collecting pebbles in various sizes. With great patience and perseverance carves striking designs on the stones, which refer to objects of everyday use!
Purses with coins, playing cards, cans, even a shirt, a dress or a pocket knife takes on 'flesh' in stone, impressing both the artist's imagination and with the final result.

Car Park in Herdern ,Switzerland

source Car Park in Herdern | OpenBuildings
Let’s face it – car-parks are not usually at the top of any architect’s list of “things to design before they die”, right? Well… I would like to challenge that idea with today’s humble little post about one of the most beautiful and interesting car-parks I’ve seen. It was designed by Peter Kunz Architects back in 1998 and located in Herdern, a little town in northern Switzerland. Individual pods with large glass panels provide a perfect resting place with a view for your beloved Porsche.
So for all architects out there – next time you get a shitty design brief for something you consider to be less than inspiring, i.e. a car-park, I would like you to remember this project and create something extraordinary. I’m quite serious. In fact, that’s an order dammit! And whilst we are at it, I also order you to have an awesome weekend. That goes for everybody, not just the architects (who are all now dreaming of their next car-park project brief, I bet). Word.

Bustler: Taichung City Cultural Center Entry by Architecton
Since announcing the five shortlisted finalists to Taiwan's Taichung City Cultural Center competition last week, we have been receiving a steady stream of further competition entries from around the world. Here's one from Moscow-based firm Architecton which moves the "Gate" metaphor to the core of its design concept.

Project Description from the Architects:
The “Gate” has always been the metaphor of interpenetration, marking the transition of one spatial or conceptual quality into another.

Cultural Centre integrates the city and the park and actually becomes the frontier Gate between various elements of the urban fabric, and at the same time – a landmark, a symbol of urban culture institutions.
Cultural Centre  consist of the Museum, the Library and the Park. Each functional unit of the complex is self-sufficient.

The ecological aspect was the key and determining factor in creating this project. The green roofs serve as rainwater harvesting stations and help protect the volume of the buildings from overheating in the sun. Horizontal spiral wind catching devices placed on the top of communication pylons are used to generate electricity.

The walls are designed as channels for natural ventilation that help save costs on air-conditioning and are equipped with solar cell panels. The transparent roofs let in natural light into the inner spaces. All these green design strategies help create a truly environmentally friendly building that falls in with the global trend for sustainable city architecture.
